Why Your Website Isn't Ranking: The 7 Things We Check First

Nine times out of ten, a website that isn't ranking has one of seven problems, and most of them take under a week to fix. In the order we check them: the site isn't in Google's index, something is blocking or slowing Google, the pages are too slow on mobile, the pages don't match what people actually search, the content is thin or copied, nobody links to the site, or it has been hit by a penalty or a removal request. Here is how we run each check on a Dubai business website, what we usually find, and what it takes to put right.

1. Is the site actually in Google's index?

This is a two-minute test and it catches more cases than anything else on the list. Search Google for site:yourdomain.ae. If nothing comes back, Google has nothing to rank. Then open Search Console, go to Pages, and read the indexed and not-indexed counts. Finish with URL Inspection on the homepage.

The causes we see most on Dubai sites: a noindex tag left on from the staging site, a Disallow: / line in robots.txt that the developer forgot to remove, a brand-new domain with no links pointing at it, and the expensive one, a Removals request submitted months ago by a previous agency and never cancelled. We have seen an entire site suppressed by a removal request that nobody in the company remembered asking for. Once the block is lifted, pages usually return to the index within a few days to two weeks; the Removals tool reverses faster than a fresh crawl does.

2. Is something blocking or slowing Google?

Open Search Console, then Settings, then Crawl stats. You are looking for server errors (5xx), a sudden fall in crawl requests, or a robots.txt that Google could not fetch. A firewall or bot-protection rule that challenges Googlebot has the same effect as a locked door.

The local culprit is cheap shared hosting sold inside a free website package. It times out at peak hours, Google records the errors, and crawling slows to a trickle. Moving to a host with a UAE or European edge usually fixes this in a day.

3. Mobile speed and Core Web Vitals

Google measures the mobile version of your site, not the desktop one. Three numbers matter. Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) is how long the main content takes to appear; keep it under 2.5 seconds. Interaction to Next Paint (INP) is how quickly the page responds to a tap; under 200 milliseconds. Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS) is how much the page jumps around while loading; under 0.1.

Three fixes solve about 80 percent of the cases we see: compress the images (hero images over 1 MB are everywhere on Dubai sites), remove the scripts and chat widgets nobody uses, and move to faster hosting. Run PageSpeed Insights on the homepage and two service pages before and after, and keep the screenshots.

4. Does each page match a real search?

One page per keyword family. The title tag, the H1 and the first paragraph should say, plainly, what the page is for and where. The Dubai mistake we fix most often is ten near-identical pages for the same service with the area name swapped, or a homepage that tries to rank for everything at once. Google then picks one page at random, or none.

Check it yourself: search the keyword you care about and see which of your URLs appears. If it is a blog post when you wanted the service page, or two of your pages at positions 8 and 9, the mapping needs work before anything else does.

5. Thin, copied or AI-flavoured content

Google's helpful-content systems demote pages that say nothing a competitor's page doesn't: no prices, no examples, no author, no process. The test we apply is simple. Could this page only have been written by someone who does the work in Dubai? Prices in AED, named locations, a real sequence of steps, a photo of the actual team. Three hundred words of generic text will not rank for a commercial term here, however nicely it is formatted.

6. Nobody links to you

Count referring domains, not backlinks. One link from each of twenty real websites is worth far more than two hundred links from one directory. We use Ahrefs Domain Rating as the scale. A new Dubai business typically needs 20 to 40 genuine referring domains before it competes for a commercial term, and the first fifteen are not hard: Clutch, GoodFirms and DesignRush profiles, the Dubai Chamber directory, Google Business Profile, suppliers, partners and one piece of local press.

Avoid the AED 500 packages that promise a hundred backlinks. We spend more time disavowing those than we spend building links, and a site that bought them usually needs a clean-up before anything else works.

7. Penalties, hacks and removal requests

Thirty seconds each in Search Console: Manual actions, Security issues, Removals. A hack usually shows up as pages you never wrote, often Japanese-keyword or pharmacy pages, appearing in the index under your domain. Recovery after a reconsideration request takes weeks, not days, so this check is worth doing early. And treat the Removals tool as the most dangerous button in Search Console: it hides pages fast and nobody gets an email when it does.

What it takes to fix, and what to fix first

CheckWhat we usually findTime to fixWhat it involves
Indexnoindex, robots block, removal requestSame dayCovered in a standard SEO audit
Access and errorsTimeouts, bot rules, 5xx1 to 3 daysHosting change or firewall rule
SpeedOversized images, unused scripts3 to 5 daysOne-off technical project, quoted on site size
Page mappingCannibal pages, vague titles1 to 2 weeksTitle, H1 and intro rewrites; merges and redirects
ContentThin service pages2 to 4 weeksRewrite per page, priced per page
LinksUnder 20 referring domains3 monthsMonthly programme inside an SEO retainer
PenaltyManual action, hack4 to 8 weeksClean-up plus reconsideration request

Do them in that order. Index and access problems first, because nothing else counts until Google can reach the pages. Speed second, then the page-to-keyword mapping, then content, then links. Monthly SEO services in Dubai run from AED 3,000 a month on our rate card, and the audit that tells you which of the seven you have starts at AED 3,000 for a site under 500 pages. When should a business stop doing this itself? When more than two of the seven checks fail, or when revenue depends on the site. At that point the cost of a wrong guess is higher than the cost of an audit.

If you want to see how the agencies that rank in Dubai are structured before you choose one, read how Dubai SEO companies compare, and if budget is the constraint, what affordable SEO should include sets out the minimum that still works.

FAQ

How long does it take for a new website to rank in Dubai?

A new site usually appears in Google's index within one to two weeks and starts ranking for its own brand name first. Competitive commercial terms such as 'seo agency dubai' take three to six months of content and link building. Local service terms with lower competition can reach page one in six to ten weeks.

Why did my website disappear from Google overnight?

An overnight disappearance is almost always one of four things: a noindex tag or robots.txt block pushed with a site update, a hosting or DNS failure, a manual action, or a Removals request in Search Console. Check Search Console's Pages, Manual actions and Removals reports in that order; three of the four are reversible within days.

Does a .ae domain rank better in the UAE?

A .ae domain is a signal that the site is for the UAE, which helps Google show it to UAE searchers, but it is not a ranking boost on its own. A .com with UAE content, AED pricing, a Dubai address and UAE links ranks just as well. Pick .ae for trust with local buyers, not for SEO alone.

How much does it cost to fix SEO problems in Dubai?

Indexing and access problems are usually fixed inside a standard audit, which starts at AED 3,000 for a site under 500 pages. Speed work and content rebuilds are quoted per project or per page, and a link programme sits inside a monthly retainer from AED 3,000. The audit tells you which of the seven problems you actually have before you spend anything.

Can I check why my site isn't ranking myself?

Yes. Search Console shows indexing, crawl errors, manual actions and removals for free, PageSpeed Insights shows mobile speed, and a site: search shows what Google has indexed. Those tools cover the first three checks on this list. Content, mapping and links take an SEO's eye, which is what the audit is for.

Not sure which of the seven it is?

Book an SEO audit in Dubai and you get the seven checks as a per-URL fix list with owners and dates, or send us the URL on WhatsApp and we will tell you what we see first, with no report to buy. If the problem turns out to be speed or structure, our technical SEO team handles the fixes line by line.
